The reality is simple: Uber and Bolt do not functionally operate on Hvar. While these rideshare apps dominate mainland cities like Split and Dubrovnik, island logistics, local regulations and seasonal demand mean their drivers are not active here.

Even if the app briefly shows an icon or lets you attempt a search, it will almost certainly time out and leave you waiting for a car that is never coming. Don't worry, though: getting around Hvar without Uber is straightforward once you know how local transport works.

Your options for getting around Hvar

Without the global rideshares, visitors rely on three main ways to travel between Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa and the island's famous beaches and bays.

• 1. Street taxis (the traditional route): you will find taxi ranks at the ferry terminals, the main bus stations and near the bigger nightlife venues. The catch: prices at street ranks can swing a lot, especially on peak summer nights or right after a ferry lands, so agree the fare before you get in.
• 2. Public buses (the budget route): local buses run between the main towns, timed mostly around ferry arrivals. The catch: routes are limited, departures are infrequent, and the bus will not take you to a beach like Dubovica or Zaraće, nor drop you at your apartment door.
