Arrival ports

Where each boat drops you

Hvar is 68 kilometres end to end and the ports sit a long way apart. The one you arrive at decides most of your first day.

Tickets

What a crossing costs

There are two kinds of line to Hvar and the price gap between them is large. Most visitors never notice it.

RouteCommercial lineState subsidised line
Split to Hvar Town25.00 euros10.00 in season, 6.40 out of season
Dubrovnik to Hvar50.00 to 55.00 eurosNo state line on this route
Korčula to Hvar25.00 eurosRegulated fare on the Korčula line
Milna (Brač) to Hvar15.00 eurosRegulated fare on the Vis line

State subsidised lines run under a public service contract at a regulated fare, and anyone can buy those tickets, not only residents. Only a handful of these sailings run each day and islanders use them, so they sell out first. In the timetable above the cheapest departure of the day carries a green marker.

Practical information

Before you sail

  • Booking ahead In July and August catamaran seats sell out days in advance on the popular afternoon sailings, and vehicle space on the car ferry sells out sooner still. Out of season you can normally buy on the day. Tickets are sold by the operators, and the arrow on each departure opens their site.
  • A full catamaran is not a dead end Foot passengers can almost always still get on the car ferry to Stari Grad. It is slower and it lands you 20 minutes from Hvar Town, but it sails when the fast boats are full.
  • Wind decides more than the timetable Strong local winds, the bura from the north and the jugo from the south, cancel the fast catamarans first, while the larger car ferry usually keeps running. Operators publish notices on the day, and any that affect the route and date you have selected appear directly under the timetable above. If you have already bought a ticket, contact whoever sold it to you about a change of sailing or a refund.
  • How often boats run On a mid July day there are 18 departures from Split to Hvar Town, the first around 07:30 and the last around 18:50. Between December and March there are two or three. The car ferry to Stari Grad is steadier: about seven crossings a day in summer and five in winter.

Onward travel

Getting from the port to your accommodation

No boat drops you at your front door, and the last few kilometres are where most arrival days go wrong.

  • By bus from Stari Grad Čazmatrans buses meet the main ferries at the port and run to Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Vrboska and Jelsa. Tickets are bought on board in cash. Departure times are on our Hvar bus timetable. The last ferries of the day can dock after the buses have finished.
  • Arriving in Hvar Town The historic centre is closed to vehicles, so nothing can meet you at the pier. The pick-up point is Dolac, the taxi rank and bus station on the edge of the old town, three minutes on foot along the waterfront. With luggage it pays to arrange the ride while you are still on the boat.
  • Door to door Drivers wait at the port exit in Stari Grad and at Dolac in Hvar Town, and take you as close to your address as vehicles are allowed. Rides can be booked up to 30 days ahead, which matters for late arrivals and for accommodation up a hill.
