Hvar's hidden beaches: how to reach Milna, Dubovica and Zaraće
The Pakleni Islands may be the first thing that comes to mind for a swim near Hvar Town, but the island's own southern coast hides some of the most striking pebble beaches on the Adriatic. Milna, Zaraće and Dubovica are three gems set within a short distance of each other, though how easy they are to reach differs considerably.

Set just 4 kilometres east of Hvar Town, Milna is ideal for anyone after a comfortable pebble beach with good facilities. The gentle entry into the water and the shelter from the wind make it hugely popular with families.
Along the shore there are several excellent restaurants serving local fish and traditional Dalmatian dishes.
- Getting there: as Milna is the closest bay to town, an easy drive along the road gets you there quickly. It also makes a great choice for a short day trip.
Zaraće: two bays beneath the cliffs
Zaraće is made up of two bays, Velo Zaraće and Malo Zaraće, sitting beneath massive cliffs that run far out into the sea like natural breakwaters.
Velo Zaraće has a broad pebble beach with a few restaurants, while Malo Zaraće is the more secluded, intimate bay, with turquoise water perfect for snorkelling.
- Getting there: the approach down from the main road is extremely steep and narrow, with only a handful of places to pull in. In your own or a rental car, turning around and parking in summer can be seriously hard work.
Dubovica: the Hvar postcard, with crystal-clear water
Dubovica is without doubt one of the most photogenic bays on the island. The wide beach is framed by centuries-old stone houses and an 18th-century manor house, with a relaxed beach bar set among the pines right by the shore.
The water here is crystal clear and drops quickly into turquoise depths.
- Getting there: you can't drive all the way down to the sea at Dubovica, so everyone walks down the steep, rocky path, about 10 to 15 minutes. The main issue is parking along the main road: spaces are extremely limited, and cars are often left right on the edge of the road on a slope, which brings a real risk of damage.
Why a private transfer is the smartest way to tour the bays
Combining several beaches in one day, or lingering in bays like Dubovica and Zaraće, is far simpler when driving isn't on your mind. Renting a car or a scooter for these routes brings needless risk, from the narrow climbs to the lack of parking in the heat.

How steep is the path to dubovica? we have a cool box and a toddler
About 10 minutes on a rough path with a decent slope. Fine with a toddler in a carrier, not with a stroller. Keep the cool box light.

Is there a minimum booking time before pickup?
For same-day rides, as early as you can. Advance bookings for a specific time are the safest.
Anywhere to get food at zarace or bring everything?
There is a small beach bar in season, but basic. Bring water and snacks, especially early or late season.
Dubovica at 9am in june: 6 people. by 12 it was full. go early

Sand or pebbles?
Pebbles, all of them. Water shoes make a difference, especially for kids.
Can we get a taxi back from dubovica in the afternoon without booking?
Do not count on it, there is no rank and the signal in the bay is weak. Book the return with the ride out, we adjust the time if you message from the top of the path.

Zarace has two coves, the western one was quieter. both worth the walk

Milna or dubovica with young kids?
Milna. Proper konoba, easier access, shallower water in places. Dubovica is prettier but more effort.
Can we bring a dog?
Yes, just mention it in the booking note so we send a car that suits.
